If you ask me if I’m fluent,
I’d say I’m fluent in a rhetoric that wasn’t
on my mother’s tongue.

This city is filled with immigrant hearts
those in search of kinder faces.
A woman once asked me where the post office was
and in the midst of her broken English, I realized
how smart she must be in Spanish.

I’m sorry that you’ve come from the ends of this earth
in search of softer soil
stayed up late, Rosetta Stone
that now, you can read
an online forum people who don’t want you.
This nation is not a hotel
we’re a home
and you’re welcome here, always.

They can’t teach you resilience in a classroom
a mother leaves her entire life behind
to hope for a better future of her child
(who hasn’t even been born yet)
truly a sacrifice, immeasurable.

If we spend our days closing our borders to our brothers and sisters
if we are all molded of dirt from the same earth
when it rains and we all turn to mud,
will we know, even then, where we each end and begin?

  1. What a heart-felt and welcoming way to treat newcomers to our country, and so in contrast to the cruel and demeaning ways they are treated once they get here. The ancient Earth laughs in the face of any person or government who truly believes they own any part of it.

    1. Thank you, absolutely! There are so many people who are outright opposed to immigration–even enough that they forget where they came from. We’re all from the earth, we drew these lines. Everyone should be welcome–everywhere. Thank you for commenting.

  2. Beautiful . My wife is an immigrant ( met her in Toronto ) These talking heads don’t understand the sacrifices made, the costs involved or the pride they hold so deep to be a part of our countries. God didn’t invent borders ….. greedy man did.😔

    1. I know the frustration! I’m fluent in English and moderate in French–but I can understand every French conversation. It really frustrates me when I have something to say but don’t know how to say it–I can’t imagine the hurt one must feel to work SO hard to understand this language only to find out that learning the language means you understand the hate you receive. Makes me so angry to think of it. Thank you for commenting.

    1. I’m glad you feel for this piece! Language is such a complex concept, that to think just because someone doesn’t speak /your/ language, means that you’re smarter. It just means that person knows two languages. Thanks for commenting.

Indeed, good question and food for thought, that.
